about plone

How many times have you said, "I wish I could change the words on my website without worrying about messing up the design", or "I wish I could add a page to my website to announce our new product?" or "How can I give my customers more value when they visit my website?"

The Plone Content Management System (CMS)

What is a CMS?

A content managment system allows you, the web site owner, to logon to your website through your browser and make changes. You can add pages, update your calendar, make announcements, even maintain a blog. If you can use a word processing program, you can use a content managment system with just a little training. There are many content managment systems available. Some are hand-coded by a super geek, some are written with PHP and MYSQL, others are based on Microsoft's asp platform. But all are similar in that they have a database backend with a browser based administration that presents your website content to you in an editable format.

Why did you choose Plone?

After researching the most promising of the CMS solutions available, Winn Trouble-shooting Bulldog King of Totsie.com chose the most robust, powerful, flexible, and dynamic one of them all - Plone. It was named after an electronica band from Birmingham, England whose music the founders admired. LIke the music, the Plone CMS is open, uncluttered and simple, yet powerful. Feel free to download this brochure by the Plone Foundation that answers the Top Fifteen Questions about Plone.

Who owns Plone?

Plone is an Open Source software, which means that no company owns it. It is distributed under the GNU (General Public License) and is 'copylefted' instead of 'copyrighted' emphasizing that the product is free of developmental constraint. There are, therefore, no licensing fees. As Plone developers, we download the product for free and pay to have it installed on special servers. You pay only for hosting, design and customization for your website needs.

Who started Plone?

Alan Runyan from Houston, Texas and Alexander Limi and Vidar Andersen of Norway founded Plone in 1999.  The core developers live in 14 different countries including the U.S., Norway, Canada, Austria, Brazil and China. Plone is constantly being improved by developers all over the world. As new features are written for the base product, they are posted online for use by the Plone community. The Plone Foundation controls the release of tested versions of the product, thereby maintaining the integrity of the software.  Plone is built using Zope, an object oriented application server. The programming language that drives Zope and Plone is Python.

Does Plone meet current web standards?

Yes, Plone meets the W3C's AA rating for accessibility and uses best-practice standards like XHTML and CSS. It is scalable so it works for both small companies and large organizations. For a portfolio of national and international sites using Plone, click here. Plone can be used for an intranet as well as a website development tool. It is known for its highly secure infrastructure.

Who else uses Plone?

Plone is used by corporations, international non-profits, universities, governments and businesses all over the world for both their internet and intranet sites. Some notable ones (that we did not create) are the Central Intelligence Agency, Oxfam International, Discover magazine and Fondren Library at Rice University.
